Pune is the most vibrant city in Maharashtra, surrounded by lush greenery and some great fort. Pune, along with other surrounding cities has got some great place to go for an adventurous short trip. Though there are several trekking spots on Pune, let’s see some of the best adventure and trekking places to visit near Pune for short and rejuvenating trip. Although these places are open to visitors in all seasons, the monsoon season is the best to go for trekking at these places. Let’s start with the list

1. Sinhagad Fort:

Located around 47 km away from Pune International Airport, this is one of the most popular forts in Pune. Previously known as Kondhana, it was the most important fort as this was the site of many battles. This fort was built around 2000 years ago in steep slopes and it was considered as one of the very important forts for battles due to its strategic location in the Sahyadri Mountains. Kondhana fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1647 and renamed as Sinhagad.

You can either reach the fort by trekking or you can go there by vehicle. If you choose to reach the top by trekking then you have to trek around 3 km and it may take up to 1 hour to reach there and all this is worth the view you can enjoy while trekking. Once you reach on top, you can enjoy the majestic view on scenic mountain valley.

2. Rajgad Fort:

Distance from Pune to Rajgad Fort is 35.6 km. Located in the hills, this is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Pune. Historically, this is the most important fort of the Maratha Empire as this was the capital for 25 years during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and one of his favorite forts. This is among the favorite trekking destination of trekking enthusiasts.

3. Torna Fort:

This was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj hence it has significance in history. 67.4 km away from Pune and around 7 km away from Rajgad Fort, it is one of the best weekend getaways from Pune. As the Rajgad Fort is located closer to the Rajgad Fort, trekkers can do both the trekking at the weekend.

You can stay at  resorts which is located in between the Torna Fort and Rajgad Fort and do both the trek along with your stay amidst nature.   

4. Lohagad Fort:

62.3 km away from Pune and 15.2 km from Lonavala, Lohagad Fort is situated in the Sahyadri hills of Lonavala and is a UNESCO world heritage site. This fort was built as a prison but was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648 AD and it was used to keep the treasury.

Lohagad Fort is among the most popular forts in Maharashtra and also it is one of the best places to visit near Pune. You can reach there either by personal vehicle or if you prefer public transport, you can reach there by train. The nearest local station is Malavli and the major railway station is Lonavala.         

5. Kalsubai Peak:

Kalsubai Peak/mountain is a mountain peak, located in the Sahyadri Hills of Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Located around 190 km away from Pune and 155 away from Mumbai, this is among the highest peak in Maharashtra you can trek.

6. Rajmachi Point:

Located around 94 km away from Pune (Pune railway station), 77.4 km from Mumbai and 27.0 km from Lonavala, this is among the most popular trekking destination and a hill fort in Maharashtra. It consists of Manaranjan Balekilla and Shrivardhan Ballekilla fortress. Trekking from Lonavala’s point is easy as it is almost like a plain walk. It takes around three hours to reach the destination.

7. Raigad Fort:

Raigad Fort, 131.3 km away from Pune and 165.2 km from Mumbai is another hill fort located in Mahad, Maharashtra. Raigad Fort has significance in the Maratha empire’s history as it was the capital of the Maratha Empire. The steps towards the fort include approximately 1400-1450 steps. If you are not willing to climb to the top you can still reach the top via rope access.

8. Shivneri Fort:

Shivneri Fort is among the magnificent forts of India. This fort is considered to be among the historically rich forts of India. Shivneri Fort is famous because this is the fort where the founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born. It was built during the time of Satavahanas and later it was captured by Shilaharas, the Yadavas, and the Bahamanis respectively. As per Wikipedia, In 1595, Maloji Bhonsle (grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj), was granted Shivner by Bahadur Nizam Shah.

Located in Junnar, Maharashtra, 92.6 km away from Pune and 154.9 km away from Mumbai. The fort is around 3 km away from Junnar. It is easy to reach at the top of the fort through the main entrance. However, the trekkers who wish to climb can try the chain route which is on the western side of the fort.
